I wonder how one would measure such a thing. I regret to say that in New York I regularly walk past homeless people slowly dying on the street on a a daily basis. I agree that I couldn't walk past a bloodied body on the street without doing something, but what makes China different? The video included in the post you commented on, and the Kitty Genovese case are just two high profile examples of New Yorker apathy.

I know it's PC to make sure you condemn everybody, bu the U.S. and Ireland (just to name two) are nations at the top of the list for social connection as far as getting involved and helping strangers. Greece and China are at the bottom of the list.

At a recent Congressional Executive Committee on China Session, one of the witnesses compared the U.S.'s blind eye on human rights to the passers by in this case. In some ways it's worse.

I doubt that there are that many universal truths about family systems that could really survive a good cross-cutlural analysis-- or even a temporal analysis withing a given culture over say 1000 years.

My cousin Bob V's neighbor wrote a book called "Hiding in Plain Sight" about her experience evading death in Nazi Germany. Since we all make our own hells from time to time, it's good that we can be creative in our devices to survive them.

Wow, this is a beautiful story. And nicely translated. I could be convinced this was originally written in English. I just noticed that you don't use the word "invisible" even once!

I like the term fadecraft. I think it's clever: warcraft, stagecraft..

Yeah, I noticed the reporting on this incident. Good post! My family systems dude, Ed Friedman, always insisted that his ideas worked no matter the social/cultural context. But it is interesting to hear how people are processing this event.
